X-raid realize first Stage-Win of a Diesel at Dakar Rally.

With cheering and applause X-raid pilot Luc Alphand was welcomed by his team at the stage finish in Luxor today. Four stages before the final of Dakar 2003, the French on BMW X5 with his win of the day classification made a present to himself and to his team and entered Dakar-history. Within 25 years of existence of the hardest rally throughout the world, no diesel-powered four-wheeled vehicle has ever managed to win a stage.

The roaring sound of the 3-litres turbo-diesels was not the only remarkable thing, Gregoire de Mevius even made it to a third position and best placing in total of a diesel engine at the Dakar Rally, before eventually he had a break down at stage 12. With his victory today, Luc Alphand, BMW X5 and the X-raid team will take a place in the history of the Dakar Rally and a proper party in the camp at Luxor will be celebrated for sure.

As obviously diesel engines as high-tech aggregates are on the advance, it will be interesting to see, what the career of the compression ignition at the Dakar Rally will be like.
