Dakar Rally starts for Anniversary

After two days of scrutineering of the participating vehicles during the last two days of 2002, the Dakar Rally started with the 25th edition today. The initial stage on the first day of the New Year was an impressive night stage at Chanot Park in Marseille.

On a parallel course two participants had to qualify for their starting positions on the second leg between Narbonne and Castellón (532 km, of which 43 km are special stage) before the liaison of 264 km between Marseille and Narbonne was started.

BMW X-raid pilots Gregoire de Mevius (BEL) and Luc Alphand (FRA) considered to start the so called Prologue cautiously. "Today we have more or less an additional function test and for the many spectators it is a good show. During our 43 km of special stage tomorrow we have a good opportunity to speed up," de Mevius confidentially said at the start.

The overall number of participants at the start is 490, of which are 203 rally cars. The Dakar Rally will finish on January 19th, 2003, at the Spa of Sharm el Sheik in Egypt.
