DC Region, SCCA Raises Over $5,000 for Summit Point Library

18 June 2001: With donations still arriving, the Washington DC Region of the Sports Car Club of America announced today that the Racing for Reading Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Series race had raised over $5,000 to benefit the South Jefferson County Public Library. The Racing for Reading MARRS, held over Father's Day weekend at Summit Point Raceway, saw more than 272 competitors racing to raise money for the library's building fund. "We still have checks arriving by mail so our final tally is still up in the air, but as of Monday we had over $5,000 in confirmed donations." said Don Caldwell Regional Executive.

Spectators to the event were treated to one of the closest ITC class races this year and the margin of victory for Bad Al Bell was only seconds. Ed York in his York Automotive BMW continued his domination of the ITS class. With nearly fifteen cars, the always crowd-pleasing GT Pinto drivers were out in force to support the library. As an added benefit to the spectators, Winchester's Prototype Technology Group displayed both of their American Le Mans Series BMW M-3s.

The 2001 Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Series Championship returns to Summit Point Raceway on July 14 and 15. Tickets are $25 for the weekend; $15 Sunday-only; children under 12 for free. There is no charge for camping. For more information, contact 1-888-660-5039.
