Dale Earnhardt Foundation rides with Andy Pilgrim into "The Driving Zone"

MOORESVILLE, NC -- The Dale Earnhardt Foundation has partnered with four-time road racing champion Andy Pilgrim in the release of "The Driving Zone" DVD for new drivers.

The 30-minute presentation has an introduction by Teresa Earnhardt, President and CEO of Dale Earnhardt, Inc. and her daughter, Taylor. They are joined by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. as he assists Pilgrim in the instructional portions.

"When Andy first told me about this project, I asked to be involved," said Teresa Earnhardt. "I have a special interest these days as Taylor is now a new driver. I've watched this with her and there is so much good information.

"I encourage all parents to be involved with their children's driving education process. I believe this video production will be a real help."

Pilgrim discusses issues pertinent to new drivers throughout the DVD. He addresses everything from "internal distractions" to his "3-2-1-Go" method utilized before getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.

The catalyst for Pilgrim to host and produce this presentation came from events he witnessed and heard of during his travels around the country.

"When I first came to the United States, I saw a number of accidents," Pilgrim said. "About 15 years ago, I was driving down to Florida when I witnessed a terrible accident by a new driver making a simple lane change on a wet highway. Because of his inexperience, he didn't do it correctly and ended up losing control of the car.

"He went across the road, up a guide wire, flipped the car over and people were ejected out of the T-top. One person died and another was critically injured.

"At that point, I decided I would use my racing experiences to convey to new drivers the message about safe driving. For the past 12 years, I've been speaking to high school students across the country about this topic."

Pilgrim started to receive immediate feedback from students and parents. They said there was so much good information in his talks and they couldn't have said it better to their own children.

"The best letter I ever received was from a mom in Florida," Pilgrim said. "She wrote to say her son came home from school and told her about something he learned that day. It was the first time he'd done that since sixth grade.

"That's the type of impact this DVD and the talks I've given around the country have made on new drivers and parents.

As a champion race driver, Dale Earnhardt knew daily the risks we all face behind the wheel. As a father, he made sure his children exercised good judgment and had proper training before getting behind the wheel -- whether it be a race car or personal vehicle.

"My dad and I worked with Andy driving the Corvette during the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2001," Earnhardt, Jr. said. "He was very helpful to us in that type of racing and we became friends.

"Andy asked me to be a part of "The Driving Zone" and I figured it was the least I could do for all the help he's given me. Once he told me who he was targeting with his message, I didn't hesitate to help."

The Dale Earnhardt Foundation is proud to help make this video possible, both as a valuable teaching and training aid for today's young driver; but also in the hope that the lessons taught will reduce highway accidents involving young drivers and ultimately save lives.

The Foundation supports charitable causes regarding children and their education. A portion of the proceeds will directly fund the continuation of those efforts through the Foundation.

During an upcoming appearance on QVC Friday, Aug. 19 at 10 p.m. (ET), Earnhardt, Jr. will talk a little more about "The Driving Zone" during a segment of the show.
