AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (May 22, 2000) -- Competitors in this year's PPG Neon Charity Challenge Presented by Yazaki head to Lakeville, Conn., this week for the series-opening sports car event at Lime Rock Park. Forty-two competitors will be vying for prize money, trophies and precious championship points as two classes of Neons combine for two separate races. Neon competitors are split into two classes, Showroom Stock B (SSB) and Showroom Stock C (SSC) for the Lime Rock event. SSB drivers pilot Neon coupes, while SSC drivers race the sedan version. Connecticut driver Larry DuLude won both class races last year at Lime Rock Park and repeated that performance later in the season at Road America. On the strength of those four wins, DuLude went on to capture the SSC class championships with a perfect 80 points. "Last year was better than we ever expected," said DuLude. "You can't count on winning all the races in any series, especially in Showroom Stock cars. We raced hard last year, were really focused and we got some good breaks. I don't know if we can go four for four again, but we know we'll have to be especially strong to repeat as champion." Tough challenges are expected from drivers Sam Ryan, Dominic Cimino, Paul Charsley and Bill Bartlett, to name a few. Now entering its sixth season, the PPG Neon Charity Challenge Presented by Yazaki, is the premier U.S. racing series for grassroots racers. Designed as a series to showcase up-and-coming drivers in near-stock version Neon race cars, it also has helped raise more than $1 million for children's charities. This year's recipients are Detroit's Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Rainbow Connection, who grant wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. Neon Challenge practice at Lime Rock begins Friday, May 26, from 10:00-10:30 a.m., followed by an afternoon practice from 2:55-3:25 p.m. Saturday's sessions include a 30-minute qualifying round beginning at 9:00 a.m. Race One of the PPG Neon Charity Challenge Presented by Yazaki will take place Saturday from 12:50-1:30 p.m. Sunday morning warm-up will be from 9:00-9:15 a.m. with Race Two of the Neon Challenge series from 10:45-11:25 a.m.
