Race Fans for a Cure® returns for fourth season; 20 appearances in 2003.
(Dearborn, Mich., Feb. 20, 2003) - Race Fans for a Cure®, which has distributed tens of thousands of shower cards and raised more than $230,000 for the fight against breast cancer over the past three years, looks forward to expanding its reach even more in 2003.
Race Fans for a Cure® - a charitable initiative comprised of Ford Credit, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and Dale and Kelley Jarrett - will appear at 20 venues in 2003, said Phil Gordon, Ford Credit Motorsport Marketing Manager. (See schedule below.) The display will offer information about the Komen Foundation and its mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment, and is equipped to accept donations from fans.
"The response to the program has been outstanding," said Gordon. "So, this year we've expanded in hopes of reaching even more race fans with important information in the fight against breast cancer."
Ford Credit, associate sponsor of the No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup Taurus driven by 1999 champion Dale Jarrett, began Race Fans for a Cure® in 2000. In three years, the program has reached countless people and raised $230,100.44, often a dollar at a time, for the Komen Foundation - including $94,182.58 in 2002.
"A key to our success at the Komen Foundation is that we collaborate with a variety of companies and organizations to provide creative ways for people to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer," said Cindy Schneible, the Komen Foundation's vice president of cause-related marketing and sponsorship. "Race Fans for a Cure® enables the Komen Foundation to reach NASCAR fans with the life-saving message of early detection and to raise additional funds for breast cancer research and community outreach programs. We thank Ford Credit wholeheartedly for being a true 'Partner in the Promise.'"
For a $1 donation at the display, fans receive a keepsake enamel pink ribbon, and can personalize a paper ribbon to show their support. Additionally, Race Fans for a Cure® will offer new this year a 1:32 scale die-cast collectible to generate funds for the fight against breast cancer. The die-cast, a replica of the Race Fans for a Cure® edition of the No. 88 NASCAR Winston Cup Taurus that was unveiled during last year's check presentation to the Komen Foundation, is available to those making a donation of $25 or more.
Furthermore, since 1998, Ford Credit has donated money to the Komen Foundation for every top-three finish and pole position (as fastest qualifier) that Dale Jarrett collects during the season. Since its inception, Ford Credit has donated $632,500 to the Foundation based on Jarrett's on-track performance and end-of-season bonuses. Ford Credit gives the Komen Foundation $10,000 for each of Jarrett's victories, $7,500 for each second-place finish, $5,000 for each third-place finish and $5,000 for each pole won. Last season, Jarrett scored two victories (Pocono and Michigan), a second-place finish (Michigan), three third-place finishes (Loudon, Dover and Atlanta), and a pole won (Michigan), resulting in a donation of $47,500 from Ford Credit.
