JORDI VILADOMS STEPS ON THE PODIUM IN HIS FIRST BAJA
Jozel Sykora in the car class and Isidre Esteve in motorbikes are overall winners of the race
The Spanish rider of the KTM Repsol team Jordi Viladoms clinched today a meritorious third position in the overall standings of the motorbike class in the 2006 Baja España Madrid-Aragón. This was Viladoms first time at the demanding Spanish race and he has had an excellent debut.
In an especially hard edition due to the conditions of the terrain and the extremely high temperatures to be stood by participants, Viladoms managed to adapt to the features of the event that has suffered several retirements. The Repsol rider, trained in motocross, achieved both aims he had set himself from the start: gathering experience in cross country races and fighting for the final podium.
After the heavy stages on Friday and Saturday that caused the retirement of more than 75 participants, the Baja España crowned today Slovaquian driver Jozel Sykora (Mitsubishi) and Spanish rider Isidre Esteve (KTM) as overall winners of the event. Sykora made good use of the advantage he took yesterday after the tremendous mistake made by Sousa's co-driver who forgot to stamp the time card in a control point and lost almost have an hour, while Esteve was able to stand the attacks of José Manuel Pellicer to take the win of the Baja for the sixth time.
Jordi Viladoms: "I'm very satisfied with how things have worked out from the first day. We've achieved our aims and I have gathered experience in a very demanding race, with broken roads due to the car passage and temperatures that caused hydration problems. I want to thank the team for their big effort and dedicate this third place to Jordi Durán, wishing him to get well soon and be back with us as soon as possible".
