DICK JOHNSON RACING'S YOUNG GUN TAKES SECOND CONSECUTIVE POLE

Dick Johnson Racing's Dean Canto has taken his second pole position in as many rounds, finishing with the fastest lap time ahead of Adam Macrow and Tony D'Alberto in today's HPDC V8 Supercar Series qualifying session at Wakefield Park, Goulburn.

The three drivers finished the session in the same order as they rounded out the first round of the series at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide with Warren Luff in fourth and Kanga Loaders Racing's Gary MacDonald taking out his first ever top five position.

"It was definitely a lot closer this time," Dean Canto said.

"The gap was a little bit bigger at Adelaide, Adam (Macrow), Tony (D'Alberto) and Warren (Luff) were pushing me hard, everyone was, but I had to dig deeper this time that's for sure."

Canto and Luff swapped the fastest lap time in the morning practice sessions, with the latter suffering from a broken front left shock absorber at the beginning of qualifying which disrupted the balance of the car for the entire session.

"Because of the broken shock at the beginning of the session the car was definitely not able to produce its optimum speed for qualifying," Luff said.

"In reality, to do the lap time we did with the problems we had we can't complain. We know we will have a competitive car going into the first race tomorrow having found the problem this afternoon, and will be pushing for a strong result in all three races with the main aim of the weekend being to leave with the maximum amount of points available.

"Tomorrow is a big day; there are three races and the reverse grid throws something extra into the deal. For us, fourth is not the ideal start but we have good car speed and with patience we can come back from there. "

Tony D'Alberto continued his flying start to the season, with strong performances in both practice sessions and qualifying in the 2004 Bathurst winning Holden Commodore.

The stand out performer of the day was Gary MacDonald, notching up his first ever top five position in the Steve Ellery Racing prepared BA Falcon. This was the first outing for the BA Falcon in the HPDC V8 Supercar Series with MacDonald restricted to competing at the first round in Adelaide in the team's AU Falcon after a testing accident at Queensland Raceway resulted in the car being unable to be repaired prior to the first round.

"The BA is more a comfortable race car than the AU and I really enjoy driving it. We have a bit more work to do, we need to plug away for the rest of the weekend but it's a pretty busy track and I'm sure we'll work up a sweat out there tomorrow," MacDonald said.

"We struggled a bit in the first two sessions and took a punt which made us make a major change to the car for qualifying, but obviously it paid off."

The first race of round two of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series commences at 10.30am tomorrow morning with the full reverse grid race at 12.45pm and the final race of the round at 3pm.
