11th HEAVEN FOR MCNALLY AT BATHURST
Mark McNally had all his plans pay off when he finished a solid 11th place in race 1 of the Fujitsu V8 Supercars at Mt Panorama Bathurst today.
After failing to finish a race at Bathurst in the past two years Mark had one goal in mind for the opening race today, to finish!
"It is a big weight lifted off my shoulders," Mark said.
"I decided to take a conservative approach to the race today because I knew that if I drove to finish I would make up plenty of places without much effort."
Mark settled into the early part of the race behind a good battle ahead including Shannon O'Brien, Marcus Zukanovic and David Sieders.
"I was just sitting there watching them fight it out; they were rubbing panels and sliding all over the place."
Mark was lured into a passing move on O'Brien, which didn't come off, before deciding that finishing the race was more important than risking one position.
"By races end a few of those guys were out of it so it proved to be the right move to just sit there," Mark said.
Mark qualified 18th this morning in a red flag interrupted session.
"I went out on new tyres but got blocked on the first fast lap so immediately pitted for my second, and final, set.
"On my second lap the red flag came out and I missed what was going to be a flyer (probably low 2:10), but was able to get a solid lap straight off the re-start."
Being in the lower 50% for qualifying made it difficult for a top ten time because the track is warming rapidly as the morning goes on giving a distinct advantage to the top 50% group.
"The best part of today is that I start form grid 11 tomorrow and have a real chance to push into the top 10," Mark said.
The final race is at 1.40pm tomorrow.
