Howard Racing win Winton opener
Fujitsu V8 Supercar Champions, Howard Racing have enjoyed their most successful race this year with Andrew Thompson winning Race 1 after taking pole position, while teammates Mark Howard and Adam Sharpe also featured in the points.
After recording the quickest practice time yesterday, Thompson continued to dominate, snatching pole by four tenths of second.
The teenage sensation then went on to lead the explosive 14-lap race from start-to-finish while Sharpe worked his way through from 18th to finish sixth and Howard claimed an impressive 11 spots to eventually finish 15th.
This is the first time all three Howard Racing Ford Falcon BA's have finished in the points, in the same race.
Race winner Andrew Thompson who is currently ninth in the championship said his goal was to finish the weekend with maximum points.
"The Team has done an amazing job in preparing for this round," Thompson said. "Our car just keeps on getting better and better."
"I got a good start in Race 1, had great cold tyre pace and was able to pull a gap on the opening lap. Apart from the small lock up on the re-start I never really did it tough and we have a very good tyre bank for tomorrow.
"We still have a lot of ground to make up in the Championship so the goal tomorrow is to come away with maximum points," Thompson explained.
Adam Sharpe recorded his best finish for the year. His sixth placing will also give him a better starting position for Race 2 tomorrow which will see the top ten cars reversed in their starting order.
"That was a better result than I expected," said Sharpe.
"We were able to avoid the oil on track and just plug away at the cars in front which paid off."
"With the top ten reversed for tomorrow's first race I will be starting off grid position five and hopefully now I am up the pointy end I will be able to stay there," Sharpe continued.
Team Principal Mark Howard also enjoyed a good solid race, coming from 26th to finish 15th and boost his points tally.
"We started pretty low down today but the track and race came to us," said Howard.
"It is a fantastic effort by the whole team to have all three cars in the points we just kept our noses clean and the rest played out."
"I have to say both Andrew and Adam did a fantastic job, especially Adam who has never raced here before."
"I really do think Adam will be the dark horse in this years' championship," Howard stated.
The Fujitsu V8 Supercars which play a supporting role to the 'main game' at Winton will contest two more races tomorrow.
