Kerrick TranZam Sports Sedans -- Three wins makes perfect start
Three wins from as many starts has given West Australian Tony Ricciardello round one victory in the 2005 Tranzam Sports Sedan at Phillip Island on Sunday May 22.
Driving the Chev-powered Alfa Romeo GTV, Ricciardello qualified second for the first heat but has been the fastest throughout the day, accounting for defending champion Darren Hossack.
Only in the third heat where Hossack beat Ricciardello off the line at the rolling start, did a perfect day look under threat. However the Saab had an unexpected drop in engine power on the second lap, and while it didn't drop oil pressure, it was retired.
"The car was very good," said a relaxed Ricciardello after race two. "All we have done is put fuel in it -- we haven't made any other adjustments."
From a likely second overall, Hossack finish fifth overall. "We haven't checked it out yet, but something went bang and it dropped power," Hossack reflected later. "We really struggled in the low and mid-speed corners with understeer all weekend."
Second overall on the was Ford Mustang Tranzam New Zealand driver Bernie Gillon with two third places before a spin whilst trying to pass second placed Des Wall in the third race came unstuck.
Gillon also had his share of understeer problems, "But we went back to where we were on Saturday and it was better in the last race -- it was someone else's oil that caught us out!"
Wall eventually finished third as he was passed by Dean Randle's Saab/Chev at an oily part of the circuit. New Sports Sedan recruit Daniel Tamasi came back for a final race fourth just ahead of Gillon. That came about after a DNF in race two because of a puncture.
The Fastest Victorian Qualifier in the Kerrick TranZam Sports Sedan qualifying shoot out on Saturday the 21st of May was Luke Chambers who won a Thunderwash Pressure Cleaner valued at $1000 courtesy of Kerrick Industrial Equipment Victorian State Manager Mr Glenn Davis.
All of the entrants from the TranZam Sports Sedans would like to thank Graeme from Kerrick Industrial Equipment (serious cleaning gear) as generous marketing partner with the TSS for the Phillip Island May round.
