Young Melbourne driver Stephen Vines is delighted after setting his fastest time ever at Sandown in the opening qualifying session of this weekends Australian Sports Sedan Championship.
Vines took almost a second of his previous fastest lap at Sandown despite some brake problems which forced him to back off early on the long Sandown straights.
"I'm wrapped in the car" said Vines after the session. "Our best time previously was in the 1 minute 19s and today we've dipped into the 18's"
Vines' Gypsum Australia/Torero Underwear Cortina is running with a new 5.6 litre Ford motor which debuted last week at Phillip Island. The team will work long into the night to try and sort out the braking problems as well as making some adjustments to the cars rear end before tomorrows final qualifying and first race.
Stephen said "We're changing the master cylinders and stiffening up the rear suspension a little bit 'cause the car was bottoming out on the bumpier parts of the track."
Vines hopes that the improvements will move the car further up the grid and possibly into the 17's.
Up at the front of the grid, series leader Tony Ricciardello in the 6 litre Alfa Romeo GTV8 blasted into provisional pole with a stunning 1:10.54 to beat out former V8 Supercar driver Darren Hossack in the SAAB V8 and the stunning new Jaguar XKR of Daniel Jameson.
The battle for second is a thriller with five cars all in the 1.12s including former Formula Ford champion Luke Youlden in the first of the triple rotor Mazda RX7s.
The weather for qualifying was dry and sunny but with showers predicted tomorrow, the second session and Saturday's first race could throw up plenty of surprises.
