The Jack Sears trophy that will be contested within the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship, for older Super 2000 spec cars, has been boosted further by the official confirmations that Warren Scott for Team BMR Restart Racing in a Seat Leon and Joe Girling driving a Chevrolet Cruze for Tech-speed under the name of M247 Racing will enter the series.
Scott is relatively new to car racing having spent most of his career racing Bikes but switched to car racing last season competing in the Lotus cup. Scott was seen testing his Seat Leon last week at Brands Hatch along with eBay Motors, Airwaves Racing and Rob Austin Racing as reported by Motorsport.com; however unfortunately for Scott an electrical fault after the first one hour session put an early end his day.
The team have now discovered and corrected the fault which turned out to be a software issue but Scott is fully aware of just how hard the transition to the BTCC will be particularly with his lack of experience and said, “I’m under no illusions about the scale of the task ahead, and I'm not expecting to go out there and immediately be at the sharp end. What I do want to achieve is a steady progression so that I’m challenging the best of the S2000 cars by the end of the season. We’d like to win a few races for sure but there’s going to be some great racing going on all the way through the field, and we’ll have a big challenge ahead. As long as we get stuck in to all the races and learn as much as possible then the results will start to come.”
Scott finished off by saying that he is lucky to have received backing from energy drink Restart and admits he is in the series for the long term by saying, “We’re in a very fortunate position having our main sponsor Restart on board for a multi-year deal. If all goes to plan we may even field two cars next season, but we’ll definitely have one to NGTC specifications. The BTCC is a fantastic series – it’s well organised, has a great following and we want to be in it for the long term.”
To be racing in the same events as the likes of Matt Neal and Jason Plato is a little surreal
As for Girling he is more familiar with tin top racing having competed in the Clio Cup winter series and Britcar championship. Last year he ran in the Dunlop production cup championship receiving driver coaching from triple BTCC champion Matt Neal along the way.
The car Girling will use is the ex John George car last seen in the series from 2011 now fitted with a turbo engine like all the cars in the series. Tech-speed ran the Chevrolet for George in 2011 alongside fans favourite Paul O’Neill and, after a year out of the series, they will return in a joint partnership with Clio Cup squad Finesse Motorsport and have internet infrastructure specialists M247 as title sponsor.
The 22 year old got his first taste of the car prior to Christmas around a bitterly cold Donington Park circuit and the man from Hull admits he can’t wait to be on the same grid as such well established names saying, “It’s quite daunting to be honest but it’s obviously very exciting too. To be racing in the same events as the likes of Matt Neal and Jason Plato is a little surreal, but I’ll be aiming to keep my head down and produce some decent results. I am not one to make bold claims and I’m sure it will take me a little while to acclimatise to it all, but I am confident in my own ability and the Cruze is also a very capable car.”
Tech-speed boss Marvin Humphries is also confident that Girling and the Cruze can make a real impression in the Jack Sears trophy and said, “We believe the Cruze is still a very capable car, and are confident that Joe will soon settle in and find good results amongst the Jack Sears runners."
Both Scott and Girling will now join the rest of the grid as the series gets officially unveiled at Donington Park on Thursday during the annual media day which will also include official testing during the afternoon. Like all the teams, Motorsport.com will also be present at the official unveiling and will bring you all the news on the runners and riders for 2013 along with the first pictures as all the cars hit the track for the first time.
