"Triple-triple" Championship wins for VX Racing in BTCC
VX Racing has clinched the manufacturers', team, and drivers' titles in the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship for an unprecedented third year in a row. The triple-triple win sets a new record for the series under the current BTTC regulations.
The manufacturers' and team titles came first at the penultimate race weekend at Donington, with VX Racing clinching four podium finishes to secure victory in these two championships.
The 2.0 litre Vauxhall Astra Coupes have dominated the touring car scene from the introduction of the model in 2001, and finished ahead of their nearest rival, Honda. Strong performances from all three drivers secured the team title for VX Racing.
Yvan Muller completed the triple for Vauxhall by lifting his first drivers' championship trophy at Oulton Park. After six years of competing in British touring cars, and having been runner-up to the title for the last two years, the charismatic Frenchman finally eclipsed the opposition with strong performances every race weekend this season. Muller endured heavy pressure from team mate and former champion James Thompson, but managed to hold Thompson at bay.
Kevin Wale, managing director of Vauxhall Motors, said; "To complete the triple for a third consecutive year is certainly a 'modern day' record. The competitive nature of the BTCC has given us exciting racing all season, but the Vauxhall Astra Coupes have been very strong and consistently beaten the rival leading manufacturers. We strive to produce winning cars, both on track and on the road, and the VX Racing Astra Coupes have certainly demonstrated our commitment to achieving excellence with this model."
Yvan Muller, driver of VX Racing's Vauxhall Astra Coupe, is elated at his first championship win. "What can I say? I am delighted with the result. I have been so close before, I came second last season and also the year before, but now I have done it. I have wanted this for a long time and I was really determined that I wouldn't let it slip away from me. James is a strong rival, so I knew that it would be tight all the way -- and it certainly was. This achievement is very special to me and I must thank everyone at VX Racing for helping me to my first BTCC drivers' title."
