Lap one drama in today's Dunlop MSA British Touring Car round 19 saw the Drivers Championship come alive as VX Racing's Fabrizio Giovanardi safely navigated a spinning Jason Plato to finish in front of the SEAT driver, his main title rival.
The Italian found himself in eighth place at the end of lap one but pulled off a masterly pass on SEAT's Darren Turner and made short work of independent driver, Mike Jordan, to finish sixth, three places ahead of Plato.
His Vauxhall works team-mate, Tom Chilton, was right at the heart of the action taking part in a four-way battle for the lead over the first half of the 18-lap race. Team RAC's Colin Turkington came out best with his team-mate, Tom Onslow-Cole, narrowly keeping Chilton off the podium. The 22-year-old VX Racing driver still managed to register the fastest lap of the race, however, in his attempts to find a way past the BMW driver.
Race two will start at 12:35 at the Norfolk circuit.
Fabrizio Giovanardi #5
"I had a problem with my clutch at the start and the car didn't get away well at all. I nearly bumped into Matt Neal and Jason Plato when they span in front of me, and I was lucky to avoid them.
"With the ballast, it was very hard to keep up with the other cars."
Tom Chilton #7
"We managed to keep up with the BMWs and that just proves how good our car was today. Both Shedden and I had a very good start and we both could have taken the lead going into the first corner. I went quicker by 0.2s every lap, but when I finally closed in I couldn't pull it off; it just would've ended in carnage!"
