Vauxhall Motorsport British Touring Car Championship Team
BTCC to get six of the best!
In a decisive vote of confidence for Vauxhall's British Touring Car Championship race car, this year's BTCC grid is set to feature six Vauxhall Astra Coupés.
The announcement follows confirmation that Internet bank, Egg will, for the second consecutive year sponsor a two-car team to be run by Triple Eight Race Engineering. With both Vauxhall Motorsport and Barwell Motorsport each fielding two cars, the addition of the Egg sponsored Astra Coupés is expected to give Vauxhall one of the strongest presences on the touring car grid.
Heading Vauxhall Motorsport's assault will be Frenchman, Yvan Muller and Yorkshireman, James Thompson. Egg Sport's team challenge will be led by the 2000 Michelin Cup for Independents Champion, Matt Neal from Birmingham. The second driver has yet to be announced. Barwell Motorsport's two privateer entries meanwhile will include 16-year-old Tom Chilton, a graduate of the junior T-cars Saloon Series.
Vauxhall Motorsport Operations Manager, Mike Nicholson commented; "We are delighted that the 2002 BTCC grid will feature six Vauxhalls. This year's championship will be tougher than ever and the decision made by both Egg and Barwell to compete with Astra Coupés is a strong vote of confidence in our cars."
The Astra Coupé was the class of the field in 2001 with the model claiming 25 out of 26 touring class victories, giving Vauxhall Motorsport both the 2001 Champion Drivers' and Teams' titles and the marque, the Manufacturers' title.
