News from the Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship 21/11/96 BTCC cash bonanza for independent racers Next year's Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship is to offer independent entrants the richest cash prizes in British motor sport, with an awards fund in excess of UKpounds 250,000. Championship organiser TOCA is doubling to UK pounds 20,000 the bonus money paid to registered drivers in the Total Cup for Independent Entrants who contest all 24 BTCC races in 1997. TOCA is also supplementing Total Oil's prize fund to award UK pounds 60,000 in cash to the Total Cup Champion, UK pounds 30,000 for the runner-up and UK pounds 20,000 for third place, plus a further UK pounds 5,000 for the driver with the best qualifying record. Announcing the initiative today (Thurs), Alan Gow, Chief Executive of championship organiser TOCA, said: 'The Total Cup for Independent Entrants and its generous prize fund underlines our commitment to non-works drivers and teams contesting the Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship. 'The BTCC has more manufacturers involved in it than any other championship in the world, but the independent driver has always been vital to the success of the series and will continue to be so. That is why TOCA is matching pound for pound Total's contribution to the prize fund and doubling the TOCA bonus money.' To further aid independents, TOCA has relaxed rules concerning support from manufacturers - independents will for the first time be able to receive limited technical and financial support from a manufacturer, and will in addition be eligible to score points in the manufacturers' championship.
