Rounds: 17/18 of 26 Venue: Thruxton Date: July 31/August 1

BRENTWOOD, July 22 1999: Ford Team Mondeo drivers Alain Menu and Anthony Reid are relishing the prospect of returning to Thruxton in the Auto Trader BTCC calendar after a series of sparkling performances since their last visit in May.

The fastest circuit in the BTCC season sees the Super Touring cars reach speeds approaching 150mph on the Hampshire circuit's Woodham Hill before braking hard for the Club Chicane, providing thrills and spills for the on-looking crowd as the drivers dash for the last corner.

Swiss ace Alain Menu said: "Thruxton is traditionally a good circuit for me. I won the first ever Feature Race at the start of last season there, and then again later in the year. The circuit is pretty much one long corner and very bumpy so the car twists and turns around a lot on the circuit. I am confident we will be very competitive."

Anthony Reid, the current lap record holder at Thruxton, said: "Although Thruxton is a fast circuit, it is very important to have a good chassis balance. We went well at Thruxton last time, and although our rivals have also moved forward, I expect this to be one of our stronger circuits this season."

Dave Benbow, Ford Team Mondeo manager, added: "We will be expecting top six finishes for both our cars at Thruxton. We ran very well last time, but the results didn't come due to unfortunate racing incidents which were no fault of our drivers."

In a determined effort to close the gap on the championship front runners, Ford Team Mondeo's test team is spending two days this week (July 22/23) working on improving the car's aerodynamics, before heading for a Michelin tyre test at Snetterton on Monday.

Qualifying for rounds 17 and 18 of the Auto Trader British Touring Car Championship will take place on Saturday July 31, with the two races on Sunday August 1.

Viewers can catch all the action live on Sunday Grandstand on BBC 2.
