Team PSP's engineers under Mike Carroll's direction worked hard since Snetterton to wring more performance from the team's PETRONAS-backed cars and were rewarded with strong performances from both drivers throughout the weekend in what is now an ultra-competitive series. In qualifying, less than one second covered the top sixteen cars.
In the first race, Bennett led the Team PSP charge just ahead of teammate Leslie and was challenging Morrison's Honda strongly for 8th place. Sadly his audacious overtaking manoeuvre let to his retirement, leaving Leslie to take a strong 9th place just 18 seconds behind the winner. In Round 16, David Leslie drove a determined race running as high as 6th until slight oversteer saw him fall back to 8th in the closing stages. Bennett, starting from the back of the grid, finished strongly one place further back.
David Leslie: " I'm very pleased to be on the pace, mixing it with the Hondas and MG and scoring points for Team PSP. My pitcrew gave me a mega stop in the second race getting me out ahead of Hughes' MG into 6th but then I picked up some rubber on a rear tyre which upset the balance. I was quicker in a straight line than Chilton's Honda but he eventually passed me. That was a good race weekend."
Phil Bennett: " My car was quick all weekend and good to race. I was going for a possible top six finish in the first race until Morrison slammed the door on me and broke my front suspension and put me out. That put me on the back of the grid for the second race but I was able to make up places and catch David. We were both fighting for position with Honda and MG; it was a great race and I was delighted to add to Team PSP's points tally."
Mike Carroll (race director): "This was a good weekend for us. We've shown we can run on the pace and fight for places. I'm optimistic of an even stronger performance at Donington - it's a quick circuit which will suit us even more."
David Wong (team principal): " I'm very pleased with the team's performance. BTCC is very strong throughout the grid and we're in the thick of the action. We are already committed to the 2004 season and aim to finish this season on a high note."
