Vauxhall's Plato Sets Stage For Night Race Spectacle With Double Pole
Vauxhall Motorsport's Jason Plato took his second double-pole position start of the 2001 British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) at Snetterton circuit in Norfolk on Saturday afternoon (August 4). Driving his Astra Coupe, Plato (Oxford), who currently leads the BTCC Driver's points tables, survived a high speed excursion to set fastest times in the 30-minute combined qualifying session. Former championship leader and Vauxhall Motorsport teammate, Yvan Muller, starts the 17-lap Sprint race from third on the grid and the special Snetterton night race (34-laps) from the front row alongside Plato.
Egg Sport's Phil Bennett held pole position for the Sprint race until two minutes from the end of the session when Plato put in his best lap, pushing the Dudley man back to second.
Jason Plato, Car 5 - Vauxhall Motorsport Astra Coupe
rid: Sprint - pole (1m 13.131s): Feature - pole (1m 13.032s)
"Very pleased with a double pole. I know what the car is doing, I know what I want the car to do and I know how to bring those two things together. The pace is there, we just have to keep it that way for the races. I got caught out by Phil (Bennett) coming out of pitlane and ended up on the grass, but that didn't affect my times towards the end of the session when I got pole for the Sprint to add to the pole I had already got for the Feature race."
Yvan Muller (F), Car 4 - Vauxhall Motorsport Astra Coupe
Grid: Sprint - 3rd (1m 13.194s): Feature - 2nd (1m 13.227s)
"Very disappointed because I could have got pole, but whenever I was on a quick lap there was always someone putting debis on the track ahead of me. It's frustrating but now I must concentrate on the races."
Phil Bennett, Car 27 - Egg Sport Vauxhall Astra Coupe
Grid: Sprint - 2nd (1m 13.176s): Feature - 3rd (1m 13.245s)
"Bit disappointed, I held pole for the Sprint right up to the last two minutes of the session when Jason beat me. I made too many mistakes and there was some inconsistency in the track which made the car react differently. As the conditions changed I got caught out. It is my best qualifying performance so far and hopefully I can have a good race."
James Thompson, Car 9 - Egg Sport Vauxhall Astra Coupe
Grid: Sprint - 4th (1m 13.464s): Feature - 4th (1m 13.546s)
"Just couldn't pinpoint the problem, but I'm struggling with setup this weekend. For some reason I've just got too much understeer in all the fast corners."
