NEWS FROM THE AUTO TRADER RAC TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, 4/7/97
CHAMPIONSHIP POSITIONS REVISED Points positions in the Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship have been revised following consultations in the wake of Sunday's (Jun 29) curtailed 14th round of the championship at Croft. The race was stopped following an accident involving Honda driver James Thompson, with the results declared after 17 of the scheduled 25 laps and half points awarded. A decision has now been taken to award full championship points. Championship race director Bob Kettleboro explained: "We have decided to award full points for the curtailed round 14 of the championship for reasons of consistency. The championship regulations are not clear with regard to curtailed races, but full points were awarded when last year's Oulton Park race was stopped early following Kelvin Burt's accident and it seems fair and consistent to do the same on this occasion." The decision has the effect of extending Alain Menu's championship lead from 102.5 points to 106 and moves former champion John Cleland into 10th position overall, a welcome boost for the Scot as the Auto Trader Championship heads for the Knockhill circuit for rounds 15 and 16 on August 3. The results of Croft's round 13 have also been revised, with Peugeot independent racer Lee Brookes -- who had been awarded 16th position -- declared an unclassified finisher on the grounds that he failed to complete the minimum 90 per cent requirement for races more than 50 miles in length. Scotland's Colin Gallie -- who leads the Total Cup for Independents as the championship heads towards his home track of Knockhill -- has been reinstated to 16th position overall in round 13.
