Rounds 21 and 22
9th September 2001
The Peugeot 406 Coupè Race Team were proud to see works driver Dan Eaves holding his Coupè at the front of the field in both the Sprint and Feature races today, as Soper suffered (due to a shunt by Vauxhall's James Thompson) at Rounds 21 and 22 of The www.theAA.com BTCC at Silverstone Circuit in front of a spectacular crowd.
After an eventful round for The British Touring Car Championships newest Touring Car entry MG, Eaves showed who was boss when he took Anthony Reid at Priory in the Sprint Race and finished in 5th overall. Soper, who early on in the Sprint race experienced difficulties with tyres, had to pit as he was losing traction. After a wheel change, which is only regulatory in the Feature race, Soper rejoined the field and finished in 10th.
Peugeot 306 production driver Roger Moen finished first in the Sprint race followed closely by team-mate Harrison who started from the back of the grid due to problems preventing him from qualifying yesterday, but still managed to take 2nd for the HTML team.
The 30 lap Feature Race saw Priory and Brooklands corner play host to bumper nudging and yellow flags when both BTC Tourers and Productions struggled to stay on the circuit. The first lap into Copse saw Vauxhall's James Thompson thump into Soper, bending his front suspension. Soper commented, "What an uncompromised move by Thompson. It ruined my race." Soper managed to continue the Feature race but clearly struggled with his Coupès handling finishing 8th.
Peugeot's Eaves however made a charge from 9th position to 5th, passing the Lexus, Alfas and MGs on the way. Eaves finished 4th narrowly missing 3rd position, which was taken by Vauxhall's Yvan Muller. Eaves commented, "Obviously I'm pleased with the result but it is frustrating that the power is still not there. For Donington we need to concentrate on the engine and further improvements."
Positions after a race inquiry into Championship leader Jason Platos move on team-mate Yvan Muller in the Feature race changed overall positions slightly (although not affecting Peugeot) resulting in Jason receiving a 30-second penalty and being stripped of his win.
