Nissan to rejoin championship?

AFTER a season away from Britain, Nissan is rumoured to be rejoining the BTCC with a one-car 'semi-privateer' team from Andy Rouse Engineering, possibly driven by long-time Rouse associate Gary Ayles.

It had been thought that Rouse - dumped by Ford at the end of '95 - would run a private Mondeo, but the Nissan deal is said to have been done with a view to a full works return for the Japanese manufacturer in 1997 with a new Primera model.

Ayles last raced with Rouse in 1991, when ARE ran the works Toyota cars.

Privateers shape up

THERE could be as many as eight cars contesting the Total Cup for privateers in this year's Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship. Reigning privateer champion Matt Neal is believed to be returning to defend his title with his Team Dynamics Ford Mondeo, while Richard Kaye - brother of Honda works pilot James - will race a Mint Motorsport Vauxhall.

Also expected are cars from hot-rodder Ian McKellar (Vauxhall), Hamish Irvine (Vauxhall), Gary Ayles (Rouse Nissan) as well as cars from TOM'S Toyota for - possibly - Julian Bailey and another top driver.
