Disregarding the weather, there's a huge ray of sunshine hovering over Telford - in fact, it's beaming down on Britain's latest National motor sport Champions...

GR Motorsport of St. Georges Industrial Estate in Donnington, has just been crowned with one of the biggest and most gripping prizes in UK motor racing - the BFGoodrich Tires® Production Team Award of Britain's top racing series, the 2001 British Touring Car Championship. Along with the honour, the team also receive a cheque for £6,500 from performance tyre giants sponsors BFGoodrich Tires®.

After a fraught, tense and incredibly close-fought season, the specialist racing car preparation company clinched the prestigious award at the final round of the series at Brands Hatch on October 7th. But success is no stranger to this determined crew, winning the 1998 and 1999 National Saloon Car Championships outright and coming 3rd in 2000.

"My head is spinning - it's been a real whirlwind year" said team boss, Paul Ridgeway, who oversaw the preparation and entry of no less than four Ford Focus's (driven by the 'fab four' driver line up of Mat Jackson, Gareth Howell, Richard Meins and Rick Kraemer) in the Championship. In fact, spinning has become rather a byword for the BTCC Championship this year as the millions that have regularly tuned into the nail-biting BBC Grandstand television coverage will testify! It has been a real rough and tumble affair, and GR Motorsport had their fair share of dramas before clinching the title!

"The whole team have been great and deserve enormous credit," continues Paul. "We competed in the full 26 rounds over 25 weeks and it's a massive job keeping this show on the road."

And what of the future? "The next step is to up the ante and compete in both the Touring and Production category within the British Touring Car Championship with the highly competitive and proven Ford Focus. We're determined to make a good showing for next year so watch this space!"
