SILVERSTONE, September 19, 1999: Anthony Reid finished the 1999 Auto Trader British Touring Car Championship on the podium for Ford Team Mondeo at a wet Silverstone today.

Torrential rain made for an action-packed if short lived Sprint Race washout. The drama began before the lights turned green when Anthony Reid's Mondeo was promoted to the third grid row because of others technical exclusions. When the race finally got underway in the worst weather of the Championship this year, Matt Neal's spin on the fourth lap allowed Reid to move into podium contention, but the safety car soon intervened as cars slid off the track. Four laps later the red flag signalled the end of the race due to severe weather conditions and the race result was declared. Reid said: "I'm pleased to have finished fourth as it was so slippery out there the car was aqua-planing at 30mph."

Teammate Menu, starting from eighth, span off the track at Becketts on the third lap and re-entered with his rear bumper trailing behind for which he was soon caution flagged. The team made makeshift repairs to allow him to continue, but he was placed twelfth when the red flag was shown. Menu said: "I span off un-sighted behind Peter Kox at Becketts and didn't get a chance to challenge after that."

The Feature Race provided its thrills and spills with the wet weather continuing making for some of the most exciting racing this year. Menu made up three places in the first lap tussles moving into fifth, then a drive through penalty for Matt Neal put him up to fourth. He and teammate Reid swapped places before a sideways spin at the hairpin put Reid back to sixth.

A slick pit stop from Alain Menu was spoiled by an early mistake at Becketts. Menu skillfully drove his Mondeo out of the gravel trap, but collided with the passing Plato finishing his chances of a podium place. Menu said:"I locked the rear tyres completely at Becketts, and when I re-joined I didn't see Plato." The safety car intervened for the stricken Mondeo to be removed. At the re-start Reid fell into the clutches of Yvan Muller, but he also had Matt Neal and John Cleland full in his mirrors, allowing him to build a comfortable gap. Reid finished strongly harrying David Leslie for second place to the chequered flag .

A pleased Reid said:"I made a bad start but the car felt good and I overtook a few people, but when I made a mistake I pitted to take fresh wets which worked very well for the remainder of the race. Ford has made a lot of progress this season and for sure we will be challenging for the Championship next year."
