British Touring Car Championship RACE REPORT

Rounds 11-12 of 26 Donington Park June 19/20

DONINGTON, June 20, 1999: .The longest track in the BTCC calendar - Donington Park's Grand Prix circuit - was the location for a creditable but ultimately frustrating weekend for Ford Team Mondeo, as the team inched yet closer to unlocking the full potential of the 1999 Ford Mondeo race cars.

Alain Menu had the best of the weekend's results and was satisfied with a consistent and reliable performance, finishing both races in the points.

In the Sprint Race Menu gained two places from the grid through a combination of a stunning start and fortune as Laurent Aiello went off the track before the first bend. Menu ran a strong race with no incidents to finish in fifth place.

Menu's Ford Mondeo teammate Anthony Reid began the race from eleventh place but steadily moved through the field to take eighth place. His determined efforts went unrewarded, however, as he lost three places after running off into the grass on lap nine. He finished the race where he started it in eleventh place.

In the Feature Race, Alain Menu again began well overtaking James Thompson and Rickard Rydell from the grid to take third place. Thompson soon fought back to challenge for his grid position back again which resulted in one of the most exciting exchanges of the race as the two of them swapped places three times in the space of one lap, before Menu eventually lost out. He stayed in fourth place until lap 24 when he ran wide at the Redgate Corner and dropped down to sixth. He finished the thirty-lap race in sixth place.

Menu said, "I had a great start to snatch third place. The race was going very well. Rydell was always in my mirrors but he wasn't gaining time. Then he drove into me going into Redgate on lap 24, forcing me to run off on to the grass.

"I'm not too disappointed though. It has been a positive weekend for me overall as this is the first time I have scored points in both races!"

Ford Mondeo teammate Reid, who wrestled with the balance of his car all weekend, started from eleventh and managed to gain a few places during the race to finished ninth. Reid said, "It has been a difficult weekend which does not reflect the progress made so far. We have achieved so much since the beginning of the season, but the toughest bit is getting from where we are now to the top of the podium." - ends -
