NEWS FROM THE AUTO TRADER RAC TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, 2/9/97 Change of plan for Brands BTCC qualifying With Saturday's (Sep 6) Brands Hatch qualifying sessions abandoned as a mark of respect, an exciting new method of establishing grid positions has been devised for Sunday's twin rounds of the all-action Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship. Instead of forming the grid from overall positions in the drivers' championship - as used at Croft in June when qualifying was rained off - the line-up for round 21 of the Auto Trader Championship will be settled by lap times recorded during a special 15-minute Sunday morning warm-up session. The grid for the second of Sunday's races will be determined according to the fastest lap times recorded by competitors during the first of the day's 38-lap sprints around the Brands Indy circuit. Alan Gow, Chief Executive of series organiser TOCA Ltd, said: "We have arrived at this solution after further consultation with the teams, the majority of whom preferred this option to using drivers' championship positions to establish the grid. "I believe it will make Sunday morning's warm-up session a very exciting spectacle and should make both races even more competitive and spectacular than usual, which will be no bad thing on a day when everyone's spirits will need lifting."
