NEWS FROM THE AUTO TRADER RAC TOURING CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, 1/9/97 Brands Hatch qualifying abandoned As a mark of respect, Brands Hatch circuit will fall silent on Saturday (Sep 6), with all qualifying sessions for the Auto Trader RAC Touring Car Championship and its supporting events being abandoned whilst the nation mourns Diana, Princess of Wales. The decision to scrap qualifying had been taken "after earnestly looking at the various appropriate options", said Alan Gow, Chief Executive of series organiser TOCA Ltd. "It is the only responsible and appropriate decision that could have been made in the light of the tragic circumstances and it is in line with the actions of every major UK sport," he added. Grid positions for Sunday's twin Auto Trader Championship races and the supporting events will be determined by the drivers' championship positions as of today's date. A minute's silence will be observed before the first of Sunday's BTCC races at the Kent circuit, but Sunday's timetable will be otherwise unchanged.
