In a surprise move, British Touring Car Championship '96 newcomer Audi has signed touring car noviceJohn Bintcliffe as its number two driver. Bintcliffe, from Harrogate, Yorkshire, will partner Frank Biela in the squad, piloting the FIA Touring Car World Cup-winning A4 saloon.

Bintcliffe is the reigning Ford Credit Fiesta Challenge Champion and won the Renault Clio UK Cup in 1994, but his experience of touring cars is limited to test drives with Renault and Ford. Further details will be announced at the Autosport International show on January 4.

The 1992 BTCC Champion, Tim Harvey, will drive for Peugeot in 1996, it will be announced at the Autosport International show on January 4. Harvey - who in 1995 partnered Rickard Rydell at Volvo - will join Patrick Watts in the Coventry-based Peugeot team, helping to develop the new 406 saloon in its role as the French company's Supertouring weapon. 1996 will be Watts' third season with Peugeot.

Harvey's BTCC career began in 1987 with a Rover Vitesse. After three race-winning seasons with the Labatt's-sponsored Ford Sierra RS500s, he switched to the Vic Lee-run works BMW team in 1992, winning a controversial title in the final round of the year. The 1993/'94 seasons saw Harvey with the Renault team.
