SUNSHINE.CO.UK TARGETS STRONG FINISH AT BRANDS HATCH
Team sunshine.co.uk with Tech-Speed Motorsport will look to end a fine Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season on a high in this weekend's final round at Brands Hatch.
The team goes into the final meeting of the season on the Brands Hatch Indy circuit looking to defend third place in the Independents' team championship, while drivers Paul O'Neill and John George will hope to lift the team into fifth in the overall teams' standings.
After a tough weekend last time out at Donington Park, Widnes-racer Paul heads to the season finale hoping to repeat the strong form he showed on the longer Brands Hatch GP circuit earlier in the season.
Then, Paul battled against poor weather conditions to finish fourth in the second race of the weekend, and he goes into the final three races of 2010 looking to give his BTC-spec Honda Integra the perfect send-off on its BTCC swansong.
"We'll have to wait and see what happens," he said. "We know the car was strong on the longer GP circuit earlier in the year and we now have to try and take that form onto the Indy layout. As we have done all season, we need to focus on trying to get into the top ten during qualifying and then make the most of the chances we have on race day.
"I really want to give the Integra a good send off and end the season on a high. This has been the best season of racing I've had for a long time, and I'm going to Brands Hatch ready to fight hard to get a result for the team."
Team-mate John suffered disappointment at Brands Hatch earlier in the year when mechanical issues forced him to sit-out race day, but he heads back to the Kent circuit aiming to end his season on a high.
Having enjoyed arguably his most competitive season in the series, the Guernsey-based racer will look to join Paul inside the top ten as he seeks to end his year with a points finish.
"Brands Hatch suits the car and it should be a good weekend," he said. "I'm certainly feeling more confident going back to Brands Hatch than I was going to Donington Park. I have to get into the top ten and score at least one point from the weekend. I'm going to give it my all and do my best at a circuit where we should be able to get a strong result to end the year."
With West Surrey Racing just eight points ahead in the teams' championship going into the weekend, Paul and John have a realistic chance of lifting the team up a place in the standings with Tech-Speed boss Marvin Humphries hopeful of a strong weekend for both drivers at Brands Hatch.
"We're ready for battle to commence in the final round," he said. "There were a combination of factors which affected us at Donington Park but we are putting that behind us and focusing on the job in hand. Hopefully we can end the season on a high, but there is a full grid of drivers who have the same goal and we've seen during the year how difficult it can be.
"People always remember the last races of the season so we want to finish well. John deserves to get points from the weekend and it's not out of the question that Paul could be fighting for a place on the podium."
With the teams' championship fight so closely fought, sunshine.co.uk MD Chris Brown said he was hopeful that the season finale would give the team further reason to cheer after a season where it has already scored more points than during the entire 2009 campaign.
"This season has been fantastic for the team and hopefully we have one more strong weekend to come," he said. "Paul has been simply stunning to take the fight to the championship contenders during the season with one of the oldest cars on the grid whilst the improvement in John since the start of the year has been great to watch.
"The Honda went well at Brands Hatch earlier in the year so there is no reason why we can't end 2010 on a high."
This weekend's season finale at Brands Hatch will feature extensive live TV coverage, which will include an online stream of qualifying and Saturday's support races on the ITV website. The broadcast will run from 15.00 to 18.30 and will be available at www.itv.com/touringcars.
Race day action will air, as normal, on ITV4 but with an extra hour of live action; with the broadcast running from 10.30-18.00 as the 2010 title race is decided.
