Triple score the goal for AmD Milltek Racing.com at Oulton Park
AmD Milltek Racing.com will make the long trip north to Cheshire this weekend seeking to secure a triple points finish from the latest rounds of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship season.
The West Thurrock-based team has made huge strides forwards this season with a maiden top ten finish in the second round of the campaign at Donington Park being followed by a double score at Thruxton last time out; where a mechanical issue after race one was the only thing that prevented New Malden-racer Tom Onslow-Cole from bringing home points in all three races.
After a series of changes over the winter, the main one being a switch to the a two-litre turbo charged engine designed to the BTCC’s Next Generation Touring Car regulations, the performance of AmD Milltek Racing.com Volkswagen Golf has been a revelation thus far in 2011 with Tom keen to add more points to his championship total at the popular Cheshire circuit.
“I think we have a good all round package now and are making good progress with the car,” he said. “Oulton Park is circuit where you need a good chassis and strong brakes. We know the Golf has a strong chassis and we are making some improvements to the brakes, which hopefully we will benefit from this weekend.
“The rule changes for the S2000 cars [which can now run at a lower base weight than in previous rounds] mean it will be tougher to get into the top ten and stay in the top ten, but I believe we can come away from Oulton Park with three points finishes. To be honest, without the failure we had before race two, we would have done it at Thruxton. That is the aim going into the weekend and I’ll be chuffed if we can come away from Oulton Park with a hat-trick of top six or top eight finishes.
“Our ultimate goal this year is to get the Golf onto the podium and if we could get a reverse grid this weekend and bring home a top three finish then it would be fantastic and a real milestone for the team.”
With three points finishes in the last six races, confidence is high within the AmD Milltek Racing.com team heading to Oulton Park and a circuit that should play to the strengths of the VW, with the Golf being ideally suited to the mixture of sweeping corners and elevation changes found at the circuit.
As well as improvements to the brakes, the team has also worked on a new front bumper to improve aerodynamics and air intake to the engine, which will make its debut on track when free practice gets underway.
“We’re really pleased with how the season has gone so far,” team principal Shaun Hollamby said. “We have good balance with the car and even though we still lack some straight line speed due to the shape of the car, we are continually working on improvements. This weekend, we’ll introduce a new look front bumper, which should be better aerodynamically and also features better air intakes for the engine, so it will be interesting to see how it performs on track.
“Without the issue we had at Thruxton, we’d have scored three top tens so that has to be our target for this weekend. Thruxton was the meeting where I feel we really gelled as a team and got the best out of the car so we’ve got to build on it when we get to Oulton Park and work hard to give Tom a car that will allow him to score more points.”
Qualifying for the latest rounds of the BTCC season will be available to view on ITV.com on Saturday, with the session due to run from 15:15-15:45.
Sunday’s three races, due to start at 12.15, 14:30 and 17:10 will then air live on ITV4, ITV4 HD and on ITV.com as part of an extensive broadcast airing from 11:30-18:00.
