Again a successful long distance test in Vallelunga.
Past weekend (14./15. Dec.) Team Wieth Racing was on the track again to test the new F550 GTS. Main target of those very comprehensive tests was not to set new lap records on the Italian track (near Rome), but to expose all parts of the car to the extreme stress of a long distance race. Test drivers were Niko Wieth and GT professional Wolfgang Kaufmann. His assignment was to give the team important informations concerning the performance and competitiveness of the 550:
"... those two days of testing at Vallelunga were a big step ahead for Wieth Racing. After a few warm up laps, it was a great pleasure for me to test this Maranello 550 GTS, that was prepared perfectly by Niko and his very motivated team. Except for some small incidents, I was able to drive fast laps constantly. The sequential Hewland gearbox worked perfectly. The 550 has a vast potential, which now must transferred to the track. The main targets must be: a better deceleration, more traction and a further increase of engine power." [Wolfgang Kaufmann]
Further Vittorio Zoboli, known from the Lamborghini Trophy, had the possibility to make some laps with the Wieth Racing 550. He was enthused especially by the engine power and the Hewland gearbox. Vittorio already knows another 550 Maranello, as he was taking part at this years Spa 24-hour race with the Force One Ferrari.
The only interuptions of the tests were caused by problems with the stability of some components. But finding those weaknesses was the aim of the weekend.
Over the holidays the car will be dismantled completely and every part will be checked, before the next testruns that are planned for January 2003. Those test shall help the team to optimize the suspension for the upcoming FIA GT season 2003.
