Scuderia Playteam Sarafree in good shape for Spa 24 hours with two cars in the top four at Oschersleben

Sunday, 08 July 2007 - Andrea Bertolini-Andrea Piccini finished the fifth round of the season in the Maserati MC12 n.11 in fourth place while the Maserati MC12 nr 12 driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi and Giambattista Giannoccaro finished in sixth place. Scuderia Playteam SaraFree has reason to be pleased with the result of the fifth race of the season, as post-race scrutineering totally overturned the race result in Oschersleben today, with first the third-placed Lamborghini and then the winning Corvette being excluded from the event. This promoted the nr 11 Scuderia Playteam Sarafree Maserati, originally fourth, to second place for Bertolini and Andrea Piccini (ITA) and the nr 12 Scurderia Playteam Sarafree Maserati to fourth place for Alessandro Pier Guidi and Giambattista Giannoccaro.

The early morning warm up showed the potential of the tyres and the whole warm-up session looked more positive than yesterday's practice sessions. Pier Guidi (Maserati MC12 n.11) found the tyres to be generating much more grip and both Andrea Bertolini and Andrea Piccini (Maserati MC12 n.12) made the same comment. However, none of the drivers pushed for "best times" in the morning warm-up. They all prioritised testing the consistency of the tyres and confirming their choices ahead of the race.

The cars started from fourth and 11th on the grid respectively. The start of the race was a bit confusing for the Maserati MC12 nr 11, Andrea Bertolini got involved in traffic and had to brake heavily to avoid a collision with another competitor. During the first part of the race, the two Maserati's were following the group of leaders, Kumpen, Mucke, Montanari and Davis. Scuderia Playteam SaraFree had to wait until the 20th lap to climb into fourth and fifth places.

Andrea Bertolini commented, "The difficult part was to avoid to locking my tyres at the start and finish my race in the first corner. I did my best to avoid an accident with three other cars. In the end, I kept the car on the track and we were in fifth position at the end of the first lap.Of course, I would prefer to get second on the track," Bertolini added. "But after a difficult weekend for us, this is a good result coming into Spa, which is a race where anything can happen. In the end, it is a really positive result for our team as we are scoring points and the team has progressed to second place in the FIA GT championship classification."

Andrea Piccini added, "I had a bit of a difficult race as the circuit was changing all the time. It was really a messy start. But we were lucky at the end and the tyres behaved well despite a very slippery track where it was very difficult to find enough grip. We are looking to the next race already. To have two cars finish in the top four is really positive for the team. We may have lost a few positions at the start but we have finished the race with good points and are now second in the FIA GT classification. We are very happy about that."

As for Alessandro Pier Guidi in the Maserati MC12 nr 12, he managed to get through the traffic and ranked a promising fifth place at the end of the first lap. Alessandro Pier Guidi changed with Giambattista Giannoccaro at the 23rd lap. Giannoccaro had a moment when he took a brief trip through the gravel, but resumed the race without any damage. Fourth went to Scuderia Playteam duo Alessandro Pier Guidi and Giambattista Giannoccaro.

Alessandro Pier Guidi commented, "It was a bit tough at the start but I managed avoid the accidents and the traffic. The car was quite competitive. We could not do any better. We were quicker towards the end. It is great to be able to score some additional points for the team."

His team mate and team owner Giambattista Giannoccaro added, "I am happy because we had lots of problems at the start of the weekend. The team showed it ability to react quickly. I made a mistake and went onto the gravel, but luckily I kept everything under control. Overall Alessandro had a fantastic race and everyone worked very hard."
