A LOT OF FUN THINGS TO DO
LAGUNA SECA RACEWAY, Monterey, California (October 14) -Oktoberfest at the Raceway, it’s just one of the many special attractions, and many things to see and do, at next weekend’s Visa Sports Car Championships presented by Honda - in addition to watching racing for U.S. and world sports car championships.
Lederhosen are optional in the giant Oktoberfest tent where the centuries old Bavarian festival will be celebrated. Glasses of Apfelschorle -- apple juice and bubbling mineral water - will be raised and waved in time to the cadence of the Alpine Trio right along with liters of Germany’s most famous beverage. Singing in English, German or any other language is more than okay; but frowns are verboten. That’s because Oktoberfest at the Raceway is about having fun, smiling and laughing. The music, dancing, singing, food and drink will make guests think they are in the middle of Munich and, in the evenings, nobody should be surprised if they find themselves having a rollicking good time shoulder-to-shoulder with folks from the Mercedes and Porsche factory teams.
A walk through the Paddock at Laguna Seca during the weekend will be like a walk through the Paddock at Silverstone in England, or Germany’s Hockenheim Ring, or the Dijon circuit south of Paris. The swoopy, ultra high-tech GT sports cars of the FIA GT Championship - including RACER magazine’s 1997 race car of the year, the Mercedes CLK-GTR - will be there to be seen up close and personal. Conversations in the British version of English, French, German and Italian, complete with animated gestures that describe what the words really mean, will be overheard. There will colorful trucks and transporters shipped over from Europe and lavish team hospitality suites where VIPs and celebrities relax away from the maddening crowd. Adjacent to the International Expo, is the popular - free of charge! -- Family Fun Center for kids from six to 96 featuring the Trampoline Thing, Colossal Slide, Climbing Mountain and Speed Pitch.
In the International Expo area there will be entertainment, exhibitions and delicious food from many lands. On stage will be “Pull” playing rock music, the alternative band “Faster Mechanic” and “Fly” whose latest video recently debuted on MTV. Playing also in the area will be bands from Monterey and Seaside high schools and, at the Vintage GT Sports Car exhibition, there will be fabulous historic race cars on display including a Gulf McLaren-BMW, Shell Dunlop Porsche 962, Martini Porsche 936, Martini Lancia LC-2 and Ferrari BB-Le Mans.
Spectators are asked to remember to bring automobile, motorcycle and racing magazines to the raceway and drop them off at Racing To Read collection points so they can be distributed through Monterey Peninsula schools to young people to motivate improvement of reading skills.
