ANDREA PICCINI ON PROVISIONAL GT POLE

Andrea Piccini continued to set the pace at Jarama, driving his nr 23 BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 550 Maranello with Jean-Denis Deletraz. The Italian set a time of 1:30.544s to beat the nr 12 Paul Belmondo Racing Chrysler Viper of Fabio Babini and Marc Duez. "It was an easy lap," said Piccini. "The car is very good. We had a small problem with the engine that cost us a little bit of time, but it will be solved before the race because it could turn into a big problem over a long distance. We just hope that the car will be reliable over the race distance."

Mike Hezemans was third fastest in the nr 3 Carsport Holland Chrysler Viper GTS-R, the Dutchman heading his team-mate Fabrizio Gollin, who drives the nr 4 Carsport Holland Chrysler Viper GTS-R. The two Lister Storm Racing Lister Storms, the nr 14 of Jamie Campbell-Walter and Nicolaus Springer and the nr 15 of Bobby Verdon-Roe and Paul Knapfield, rounded off the top six and therefore the Super Pole contenders. The Lister Storm drivers opted not to make a final run on new tyres, saving them for later in the weekend. The nr 1 Larbre Competition Chrysler Viper GTS-R of Christophe Bouchut and David Terrien set seventh fastest time, and Bouchut was at a loss to explain why. "I was a second faster than yesterday with everything the same on the car," he said. "Yesterday I was at the front, now I am not." The Force One Ferrari 550 Maranello of David Hallyday and Philippe Alliot stopped out on the track without setting a time following an oil pump failure. The failure caused the car to drop oil on the track , bringing the red flags out. The team will change the engine before second qualifying this afternoon. The nr 9 Team Art car had its times allowed up until 11:13, due to not stopping for a red light. As the car did not go out after 11:13, it will have to qualify during the afternoon session.

STEPHANE ORTELLI FASTEST IN N-GT

Stephane Ortelli set provisional pole position in the N-GT category in his nr 54 Freisinger Motorsport Porsche 996 GT3-R, 14th position overall. Ortelli headed four more Porsches in a fantastically tight class, and only Andrea Bertolini was able to make the Super Pole session for Ferrari, sixth fastest in class. Ortelli set a time of 1:34.736 to head the nr 76 RWS Motorsport Porsche of Antonio Garcia and Hans Fertl, and the nr 58 Autorlando Sport Porsche of Philipp Peter and Toto Wolff. "That was one of my best laps," said Ortelli. "I drove here for the first time yesterday, and I have learned the circuit very quickly I think! I want Sascha to do the Super Pole because he has more experience on the new tyres."

The Autorlando Sport team changed Peter's engine after it failed yesterday during the free practice. "This engine is not as good as the other one," said Peter. "This is a standard engine while the other one had work done to it by the team. There is not a big spread between the top teams, it is very close between us."

The championship-leading nr 50 JMB Racing Ferrari 360 Modena of Christian Pescatori and Andrea Montermini missed the top six in class, and therefore the Super Pole, when the gearbox failed leaving Pescatori stranded out on the track. "Something broke on the gearbox," said Montermini. "I think we could have done better than that. We had the weight in Brno, it makes a difference to the power and on the brakes. The race is three hours long, so I do not think that missing the Superpole will be a problem."
