LEINDERS-MARTIN FIFTH IN INTERLAGOS
Bas Leinders and Maxime Martin set a great result during the Brazilian round of the FIA GT1 World Championship, this Sunday on the track of Interlagos. The Belgian pairing finished in fifth. The other Ford GT of the Marc VDS Racing Team, driven by Markus Palttala and Matteo Bobbi crashed at the end of the Qualifying Race, but managed to finish in 15th in the main event. Next week sees the end of the World Championship, with a final round in Argentina.
The Marc VDS Racing Team is going strong in the final phase of the season. Even though their best result is still the 4th spot they conquered in France at the beginning of July, Bas Leinders and Maxime Martin set the same result in Brazil as they did during the previous races in Navarra and Portimao: fifth! "I am a very happy man!" said Jean-Michel Delporte, team manager of the Belgian team. "Max and Bas both set a great stint, in which they gained six places. Maxime started the race very well, immediately climbing from 11th to 8th. At the time of the pitstop, the car was already in fifth! We lost a place during the driver change, but with a last-gasp effort during the final lap Bas regained the spot. Great job!"
During the qualifying race the Ford GT #40 had to be happy with an 11th place however. "Problems with tyre pressure", Delporte explains. "Based on the information we got by the tyre manufacturer we chose a too high a pressure. It influenced the behaviour of the car badly. On Sunday we fixed the problem and gave our drivers a perfect car again."
The confirmation came through Martin and Leinders' result, but also by Palttala and Bobbi's lap times, which were very close to the fastest ones. "At one point in the race, Markus and I were the fastest cars on track!", Bas Leinders stated.
But the #41 pairing had started the Championship Race only in 20th, a result of a freak incident during the Qualifying Race. "At the start I was hit from behind", Markus Palttala explains. "I felt that the road holding of the car was no longer ideal, but I continued as good and as bad as I could. Matteo took over for the second part of the race, but in the final lap a wheel bearing broke and after a double spin, the car hit the guard rail very hard. Fortunately, it was repairable, but it meant we had to start the main race from the back. To finish 15th in these conditions, and to set the lap times that we did, is a great boost for the final race of the season."
That final race is held next weekend, on the Argentinean track of San Luis.
