Derbyshire looking to make the most of opportunity

Jamie Derbyshire will race in the fourth round of the FIA GT Championship at Hockenheim, Germany, this weekend with a distinct advantage. The circuit, near Frankfurt, has been redesigned since the series last raced there, and is new to everyone, unlike the previous four races in which Derbyshire has been playing catch-up to his more experienced colleagues.

The Hockenheim circuit has changed from the high-speed blast through the trees to a more sanitised layout which should be more suited to Derbyshire's Spirit Volkswagen-supported V-12 engined Lister Storm. "If this circuit is new for everybody, then I stand a much better chance of showing my pace against the others," said Derbyshire.

"I am really enjoying myself at these races, learning new circuits, the car and the championship, but it has hurt me over the first four races. During practice and qualifying I usually get between 20 to 25 laps to learn the circuit and gather information on set-up of the car.

"When I go into the race, I learn far more than I have before the event and the drivers I am up against are very good. This weekend we will all be learning the circuit together and I hope that will help me a little.

"The paddock is a friendly place. Everyone has respect for each other and the atmosphere is very relaxed, but then you get into the car and the standard of driving is far higher than I have ever experienced before. It is a fantastic learning ground for me."
