Callaway Competition set for Portugal debut
Callaway driver Luca Ludwig joins Marc Sourd Racing
Leingarten / Portimao (Portugal), 08.09.09 Callaway Competition is set to the start into the second half of the 2009 FIA GT3 European championship with this weekends seventh and eight round at Portimao (Portugal). Reigning European champion Arnaud Peyroles (France) and Juergen von Gartzen (Germany) will share driving duties in the Corvette Z06.R GT3, developed and built by Callaway Competition in Germany.
The FIA GT3 European championship visits the new track in Portugal for the very first time. The track at the Algarve coast has already built a reputation as a very demanding track, with various elevation changes and technical corner combinations.
Callaway Competition made the best of the almost three month long summer break in the European championship and optimized the set-up of the Corvette. Before the last round at Oschersleben, Callaway Competition was permitted to use a harder tyre compound. During recent tests, Callaway Competition has adapted these new tyres to the American sportscar.
"We tested different things and achieved satisfying results" Callaway Competition team principal Ernst Woehr explains. "Now we hope for a positive respond of the FIA, if we may use the tested configuration at the Portimao round. We already lost half of the season because of the tyre woes, but with the harder compound and detail changes in the set-up, we are rather confident for the second half the season.
While Callaway Competition starts in Portugal with one Corvette, Luca Ludwig, another Callaway driver, makes his debut in the European championship with Marc Sourd Racing. The French team also trusts in the Callaway built Corvette Z06.R. A car which Luca, son of legendary sports- and touring car driver Klaus Ludwig, knows very well. Luca is racing for Callaway Competition in the German ADAC GT Masters series and is currently runner up in the championship after scoring three victories in his first full season of racing. With Marc Sourd Racing, Luca has now a very good chance to gain some experience in the European championship,"Woehr said. The second Corvette of Marc Sourd Racing will be entered for the two Italian drivers Diego Alessi and Luca Pirri.
