Damax delighted with debut
British FIA GT3 team Damax were delighted to score a podium in the debut race for the new Ascari KZ1R in this seasons new FIA GT3 European Championship. The Championship attracted a fantastic 43 car entry for the season opener with a variety of cars from Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, Viper, Maserati, Aston Martin & Lamborghini all taking the fight to the new Ascari.
It was Ben Collins and Aaron Scott who scored the teams first podium, all the more impressive as they actually started the race from the pit lane!! Aaron Scott opted for slick tyres on a wet but drying track to start the race and, despite being delayed in the early laps, it wasn't long before the number 45 Ascari was the fastest car on track. Aaron clawed his way back to 19th posiiton prior to the pit stop to hand over to Ben Collins. Collins then completed an epic drive and, as the early leaders struggled for pace with worn wet tyres, the Ascari picked off car after car to score an incredible 3rd position by the end of the race.
Scott said, "It was a fantastic result for Damax and Ascari. The car is amazing and this is a great start for us. The GT3 Championship is incredible, what a variety of cars!! It was difficult at the start but the decision to go for slicks paid off, Ben drove a fanastic stint at the end to get us on the podium!"
Robin Ward said, " What a way to start the Championship. The Ascari is very fast and my team have done a superb job with the car. Both drivers drove a great race and we are very pleased. I'd like to thank our sponsors at Gigawave, Cammack and Total World Sports."
In the 2nd race it was the turn of the number 47 car to star as drivers Luca Pirri and Stuart Turvey fought there way up to 4th position in the wet race. Once again the Ascari showed its pace and verstaility lapping amongst the quickest cars throughout the race. Unfortunately Scott and Collins were forced out of the race before the start with a broken stub axle.
The next round of the FIA GT3 European Championship takes place in Germany at Oscherslaben on 2 July.
