Again bad luck for Wieth Racing
After the gearbox breakdown at Enna Pergusa, the team worked very hard to get the Ferrari 550 GTS ready for the fourth round of the FIA GT world championship, this time taking place at Brno/CZ.
Some important improvements had to be done; for example the problems with the alternator belt; this could be solved with the aid of our friend Franz Konrad, who helped us out with alternator of his Saleen on Saturday night on the racetrack.
We could not reach phenomenal lap times in the first qualifying because of some set up problems: the roll bar, changed before Enna, did not work at Brno. After the change, we made some good lap times at the Sunday warm up session.
During saturday night we checked all neuralgic points on the car so that we were hopeful to make a good race on Sunday.
Wolfgang Kaufmann started the race and had to notice, after five rounds, that the power steering pump did not work. An electrical fuse kept jumping out several times. After an unscheduled pit stop, Wolfgang Kaufmann continued the race - having lost 3 rounds. Some laps before changing the driver, the temperature of the enginge climbed abruptly up to 150° C - the belt of the waterpump has disapeared once more.
After solving this problem Niko Wieth continued the race. Again with the loss of several laps.
The clutch broke down later as well, so that Niko and Wolfgang had to drive the Ferrari without it. After two hours Wolfgang Kaufmann took place again behind the wheel, but some laps later, he had to intercept finally; the damaged clutch caused heavy vibrations that made it impossible to go on.
After this dissapointment the team has now four weeks until the next race at Donington. We will use this time again to debug the remaining mistakes. Particulary we will change the supply for the cooling water, the power steering pump and improve the cockpit ventilation. In addition to that we want to make an extensive long distance test, what was not possible before because of the accident at Barcelona test. All reliability problems should be eliminated after this test.
We think, that we should be able to come close to the top teams at Donington.
