Apart from abnormally low temperatures, the weather could not have been better with blue sky and bright sun as drivers took to the track on Saturday for the eighth round of the GT season at Brno. In the late afternoon qualifying session, Scuderia Playteam Sarafree secured 6th and 7th place for respectively Andrea Bertolini and Alessandro Pier Guidi.
11 - Andrea Bertolini
"This result of sixth with a time of 1.55.336 is not too bad considering the ballast we are carrying for the race. The car went well, we are confident. The most important (thing) is not to burn the tyres during the race on this very technical track, as it is hard on tyres. We will start with harder compounds tomorrow. It is certainly a better choice for a race like here."
12 - Alessandro Pier Guidi
"The qualifying session did not go exactly as we wanted as we modified a number of important parameters that we had not tested before. In any case at this point of the week-end the most important is to start in good conditions and to finish the race on a high note."
Free Practice 1
In the first free practice Alessandro Pier Guidi was fastest with a time of 1.56.325 (34 laps), six tenths faster than the #4 Corvette C5R of Kumpen and Bert Longin. Meanwhile both Andrea Piccini and Andrea Bertolini completed 30 laps and were fifth fastest time in 1.57.785.
Alessandro Pier Guidi (Maserati MC12): "It worked rather well this morning during the first session and the car was consistent in all the laps. We did long runs to start the day. I can only be hoping that qualifying will be just as good. Our car does not have any weight handicap and this could turn out to be an advantage at the start." Andrea Piccini completed: "Let's put it straight: we are pleased for a fifth place and a performance using old tires for the start of the week-end."
Andrea Bertolini added: "The track was still very cold despite the sun. Not too sure if it will warm up sufficiently during the rest of the day. Of course, our heavy weight handicap is a bit of a problem and we feel it with the car especially in the part of the track which we use going uphill."
Free Practice 2
In the second practice, the two Maserati MC12 came respectively in 12th and 13th place. Giambattista Giannoccaro explained: "I did most of the running in the second practice because I had to learn the track. We did a good job preparing the car for the race and qualifying session, but it is not fantastic overall and I do hope that the race strategy will play an important role. In terms of classification in the Championship, it is very important that our car helps Andrea Bertolini and Andrea Piccini."
Alessandro Pier Guidi sums up his session: "I did not do a lot of laps at the end. It was just a matter of checking the car. The handling is alright and we will see what qualifying will be like".
Andrea Bertolini continues: "We did a good job preparing qualifying. We tested specific compounds as the track is hard for tyres and we want to be well prepared for the race. We have a lot of experience on this difficult track. It is interesting that this race is a very long race."
Andrea Piccini says: "This technical track is hard on compounds. But it is not so important to be in front."
