YAS MARINA: FIRST POINTS FOR MATTEO BOBBI IN THE OPENING ROUND OF WORLD FIA GT1 CHAMPIONSHIP
The opening round of the World FIA GT1 Championship, held last weekend at Abu Dhabi on the brand new Yas Marina circuit, awarded Matteo Bobbi with the first points in classification. The Milanese driver, behind the wheel of a MC12 Maserati of Triple H Team Hegersport with the crew-mate Bert Longin, started the weekend steeply since qualifying was stopped due to a nasty accident, fortunately without serious consequences, occurred to Natacha Gachnang. At that moment, during Q1, Bobbi did not use a set of new tyres and was down in sixteenth position that, due to the early stopping of the session, bacame his starting position in the Qualifying Race.
Race one practically did not even start for the winner of 2003 title, due to an axle shaft failure during the formation lap that prevented him from lining up on the grid.
The Championship Race, held under night lights, had a better unfolding. Bobbi and Longin have been protagonists of a solid recovery that took them from the back of the grid up to the seventh final place which gave them the first six points of the season.
"Considering the way the weekend started things went fairly well: the objective was to get some points and we did that. Our competitiveness is tight to the balance of performance that, as foreseeable, turned out to be quite penalyzing for Maseratis; I believe that even without the inconvenients we had race s' results would not have been much different. The team did its best to exploit the potential that the MC12 can express with these rules and the same was done by us drivers too".
The next round of the World FIA GT1 Championship is scheduled for 2 May at Silverstone (UK).
