Beebe braced for Rally GB
Young Nuneaton based rally driver Matt Beebe is preparing for the biggest showdown of his short rallying career as he prepares to tackle the forthcoming International Wales Rally GB in his trusty little M3 Motorsport backed MG ZR160.
Matt, who has starred in every championship he has competed in and is twice a winner of the MG ZR Championship upgraded from his little N1 class MG to a bigger 2 litre car for the 2006 British Rally Championship. Despite going head to head with far more powerful cars than his little 160 horsepower Hankook shod MG Matt has continued with his run of success but does admit to being pleasantly surprised to be leading Class R3 as the championship heads to its 6th and final round, the International Wales Rally GB. At the beginning of this year I had no idea what to expect but to be fighting with Justin Dale for the championship is incredible. We've both had our share of ups and downs throughout the year and it is fitting that the championship goes down to the wire!
Both title contenders experienced a mixture of fortunes on the recent International Rally of Yorkshire with Justin surviving a high speed 2 wheeled moment which left the roof of his Renault Clio dented! Matt endured some problems of his own, including an in car fire which his co-driver had to extinguish mid stage! The pair also had to do some roadside repairs to the little MG which took quite a battering over the North Yorkshire stages.
From wrapping up a broken exhaust with a tin can to forcing a tiny stone into the air sensor on the engine the rally was really a test of all of their combined skills!
Now the young duo will face the final test of the year. With Wales Rally GB being nearly twice as long as any other event of the year their fitness and the cars strength will be tested time and time again as they tackle the Welsh forests in sub zero degrees in early December.
Matt has only contested one world rally to date. On the 2005 International Wales Rally GB he impressed with both his pace and mechanical sympathy to bring his tiny class N1 MG ZR home not only first in class but the young service technician and part time college tutor once again staged a giant killing performance to beat far more powerful cars to win the accolade of being the first Group N (Production Class) 2 wheel drive car at the finish!
With the slimmest of leads in the 2006 R3 championship Matt knows a strong result on the International Wales Rally GB is important but regardless of the result he is more than happy with how the season has gone.
I'm really looking forward to Wales Rally GB. I thoroughly enjoyed it last year but am apprehensive as I know its going to be really, really cold there this year. Thank goodness my little MG has a heater! It's going to be a good fight against Justin but I just hope we have a clean run.
The International Wales Rally GB runs from the 1st to the 3rd of December 2006 and is based in Cardiff.
