Scottish Suzuki sensations all set for biggest challenge ever!

Scottish rally aces Gordon Nichol and Jane Nicol are raring to go as they travel across the Irish Sea for possibly the biggest challenge of their rallying careers. The Rally Isle of Man has a well deserved reputation for not taking any prisoners and, running on the tightest of budgets, Gordon is well aware of the need to balance speed with keeping the Suzuki on the black stuff.

St Boswells based Gordon, a digger operator by trade, upset the form book back in April, when he took a dominant victory on the opening round of the Suzuki Swift Challenge, the Pirelli International Rally. Co-driven by Edinburgh based rallying instructor Jane, the pair then endured a troubled run on their home event, the Jim Clark Memorial Rally. They overcame a variety of problems, including a broken gearbox, on their home event. This was made even worse when they found out they had only been beat into third by 5.9 seconds, after their handbrake failed coming into a hairpin causing them a short excursion into a ditch.

The Manx will only be rally number 20 for Gordon and although the pair have some good experience on tarmac it will be the first time either of the pair have ever competed on the treacherous lanes around the Isle of Man. Added to that the fact that opportunities to test their factory run Cooks Car and Van Hire backed Suzuki Swift are few and far between, the pair are aware that they need to be on the ball from the very start.

I've been preparing for the Rally Isle of Man by watching loads of in-car footage. I have not got a clue what to expect really, except that it is fast and bumpy and very, very unforgiving. To be honest, that suits me fine. My natural driving style is neat and tidy so I guess we'll carry on with the same game plan we've had all year. Go at our own pace and see where we are at the end of day 1.

Gordon and Jane are the only Scottish crew contesting the distinctively International flavoured Suzuki Championship and are competing against teams from throughout the British Isle`s and Europe. The winner of the 6 round series, which includes rallies in Scotland, the Isle of Man, Ireland and England, will win a fully funded works drive in a Suzuki Swift Super 1600 on the end of season Wales Rally GB.
