KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The top three qualifiers of the 2008 Lamb Weston Columbia Cup each won a qualification heat in Saturday action at the fourth stop on the American Boat Racing Association National Hydroplane Series.

The U-1 Ellstrom Elam Plus driven by Dave Villwock (Auburn, Wash.) held off Jeff Bernard (Kent, Wash.) in the U-5 Formulaboats.com to win Heat 1A and claim 400 qualification points toward Sunday's final event. Villwock used a fast-paced 157.557 mph first lap to remind the rest of the field that he and his boat are the defending champions of both the Columbia Cup and the ABRA National High Points Championship.

Heat 1B saw the piston-powered U-3 Hoss Mortgage Investors Too and driver Jimmy King (Memphis, Mich.) blister the field with an average pace of 153.993 mph across three 2-1/2 mile laps on the Columbia River racecourse. King battled the U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing driven by Jean Theoret (Montreal, Quebec), winning by a two-roostertail margin.

The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison driver Steve David (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) used some crafty maneuvering to outfox the U-10 Hoss Mortgage Investors boat driven by David Bryant (Mesa, Ariz.) in the milling period before Heat 1C to claim the lane one. With the first lane secured, David used the shortest distance around the racecourse to hold off Bryant and claim the checkered flag. Rookie Kip Brown (Maple Valley, Wash.) in the U-17 Our Gang Racing finished third in the heat after Ken Muscatel (Seattle, Wash.) in the U-25 Miss Procraft Windows lost the ability to steer at the end of lap two. The boat hooked violently left and came to a stop in the infield. Muscatel was not injured in the incident.

The second day of racing at the Lamb Weston Columbia Cup is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PDT on Sunday with a winner-take-all final scheduled for 4:50 p.m. The top five point accumulating boats through the series of heat races will gain entry into the final.
