FORMULA, OBERTO TAKE FIRST HEATS IN SAN DIEGO

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Jeff Bernard (Kent, Wash.) and Steve David (Lighthouse Point, Fla.) each posted victories in the first day of heat racing at the 2008 San Diego Bayfair powered by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Bernard piloted the U-5 Formulaboats.com boat past a hard-charging U-37 Miss Beacon Plumbing driven by Jean Theoret (Montreal, Quebec) to not only win Heat 1A, but also move into second place in the National High Points Championship standings. The 400 final heat qualification points gave Bernard and his team a 44-point margin over Theoret and the Beacon.

Ken Muscatel (Seattle, Wash.) in the U-25 Superior Racing passed a sputtering U-13 Graham Trucking/Spirit of Detroit boat driven by J. Michael Kelly (Puyuallup, Wash.) to finish third. Greg Hopp (Snohomish, Wash.) in the U-100 Mirageboats.com failed to finish the race after dying in the first turn of lap two.

Bernard used some crafty maneuvering after the one-minute to go mark and took the inside lane away from Theoret and used the shorter distance around the Bill Muncey memorial course to his advantage.

"When I saw that [Theoret] was at the one-minute buoy so early, I knew I could go around and have time to get my seven boat lengths and then move in to take lane one," said Bernard. "This is something I used to do with the inboards in Region 10 racing and this time it worked perfectly. "

The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison and David extended their lead in the National High Points Championship race to 1109 points with a victory in Heat 1B. David led wire-to-wire, but had to hold off a late surge from Jimmy King in the U-3 Grandview Resort Presents Hoss Mortgage Investors, claming victory by less than a roostertail.

"I was closing at the end, but the inside lane made the difference," said U-3 driver King. "The boat ran real well. We had no problems like we did in the Northwest. [Owner Ed Cooper] said 'the gremlins would eventually go away' and it looks like they have."

Mike Allen (New Orleans, Louis.) returned to heat racing after suffering a destructive blowover accident in ABRA's third circuit stop in Detroit, Mich. and finished third, topping a distant U-50 Spirit of the NAVY and driver Brian Perkins (Kent, Wash.). Despite beating the U-50, Allen was not pleased with the finish, and is certain that the Formula team can get more out of the newly repaired boat.

"The computer data from the boat is not the same as when qualified," said Allen. "We're way low on the N2. We thought this was our best combination, but the data was showing something different. We're going to change a gearbox and go down a gear to pick up RPMs."

San Diego Bayfair is the final race in the 2008 American Boat Racing Association's unlimited hydroplane circuit. Two sets of qualification heats are scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m. PDT with the winner-take-all final scheduled for 5:15 p.m. PDT. The U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison has never won the team National Championship trophy since its inception in 1961. The U-6 is the longest consecutively active team in unlimited hydroplane history. David won the driver's National High Points Championship trophy in 2006.
