New Faces Take Titles At IHBA Mid America Nationals
(August 26, 2001) Chouteau, OK --- Three professional drivers made their way into the winners circle for the first time at the 2001 IHBA Mid America Summer Nationals in Chouteau, Oklahoma as Kebin Kinsley took the Top Fuel Hydro victory, Andy Reynolds captured the Top Alcohol Hydro win and Jarrett Silvey nabbed a win in the Pro Mod class. Don Ermshar won his second consecutive Top Alcohol Flat national event today.
Kebin Kinsley, of Kennedale, Texas, made the laps he needed to all weekend and was pleased his boat stayed consistent. In the final versus S. Houston's Craig Caulk, Kinsley's Speed Sports Special machine laid down a solid 5.493 second, 198.80 mph pass for the win.
"I'm proud of this team and really glad we worked out a lot of the bugs in this hot rod. It was worth the wait to get the first win. We are looking forward to Castaic. We will go home and polish up the boat and try and find some more horsepower. We know the boat will run, so the next step is to get more horsepower," said Kinsley.
In the Top Alcohol Hydro class Andy Reynolds, of Belmont, North Carolina, won the event on a single run in the final with a career best 5.51-second pass. Reynolds was slated to face Eufaula, Oklahoma's Tim Stokes in the final but Stokes lost control of his Widowmaker machine in the semis and was unable to get his boat prepared for the final.
"We are glad we won the race. I would have liked to have raced Stokes but I'm glad he is OK. My crew and sponsors really had a lot to do with this win and my brother, Joe Reynolds, really was the key to the whole thing," summed up Reynolds.
The race of the day was contested in Top Alcohol Flat when points leader Eric Morris, of Madera, California, and number two-man Don Ermshar, of Riverside, California, squared off. Morris could have taken a commanding lead in the points battle with a win but it was Ermshar who took the win light and closed in on the youngster. Heading into the next IHBA national event only 238 points separate the two drivers.
"The was the most important run of the season for us if we are going to win a championship. The boat has been running great and it is really fun to drive. We are going to make a points race out of this season and this was the weekend to make another move. We have a lot of momentum heading back to California and we know we have a shot at this championship. I had a lot of help this weekend from my crew of Gene Hackett, Larry Solomon, and Gary Wyatt," said a confident Ermshar.
In the Pro Mod Final first time winner Jarrett Silvey was all smiles coming to the out ramp after his victory lap. He had the toughest ladder to work his way through when he paired up against Frank Carter (4th in points) in the first round, then faced Gus Ward (1st in points) in the semis and finally Jim Parsons (1st in points after Ward lost) in the final. Silva used patience and consistency to take the win.
"We had a phenomenal day. Everything went right for us. We had to climb a mountain to get the win but we took it one step at a time. I just stayed calm and did my job. We had to stay on top of our game but our boat was flawless and I have to thank my crew chief Mike Murray for making it all happen," said an excited Silva.
The IHBA national series will continue in Castaic, California with the IHBA California Finals, September 28-30, 2001. <pre> Final Results 2001 IHBA Mid America Summer Nationals August 26, 2001
