Budweiser Madison Regatta supported by Belterra Casino Resort Scheduled for July 4-6
(Madison, Ind.) - Unlimited Hydroplane drivers and teams are currently preparing for this weekend's Budweiser Thunder on the Ohio in Evansville, Ind. Immediately following that race on Sunday, the teams will pack up and drive up the Ohio River to Madison for the Budweiser Madison Regatta supported by Belterra Casino Resort. This year's event will mark the 53rd time that Unlimited Hydroplanes have raced in Madison.
"With races in Evansville and Madison, Unlimited fans are treated to back-to-back weekends of action packed racing along the historic Ohio River," said Bart Garbrecht, CEO of Hydro-Prop. "The Ohio River is a terrific venue to host these Unlimited Hydroplane races and always attracts thousands of fans from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky."
"Unlimited Hydroplane racing and the Budweiser Madison Regatta supported by Belterra Casino Resort have a long and storied history together," continued Garbrecht. "Besides supporting the oldest Unlimited team in the series, the Miss Madison, the entire community is involved with the event every year. The Madison community has witnessed some of the most thrilling Unlimited races in the history of the sport including the 1971 Gold Cup victory by the Miss Madison and Steve David's win in 2001 in front of the hometown crowd. With the increased parity in the sport, this year should be no different as a number of teams are capable of producing a victory."
In addition to the Unlimited Hydroplane race, this year's Budweiser Madison Regatta supported by Belterra Casino Resort festivities include a Vintage Hydroplane Show, Limited Class racing, air shows, music and much more.
Practice and qualifying for the Unlimited Hydroplanes will begin Friday, July 4 with the finals scheduled for Sunday, July 6. The Budweiser Madison Regatta supported by Belterra Casino Resort race will be televised on SPEED Channel on Sunday, July 20 at 2:00 PM (EDT).
* Last Year at Madison After securing the fastest qualifying spot and winning two preliminary heats, Nate Brown and the U-16 Miss Elam Plus headed to the final looking for their first win of the season and the third in four Unlimited races. Brown trailed the early leader, Terry Troxell, for three laps until he finally was able to pass him for the Madison title. Troxell finished second and Dave Villwock followed in third.
* Steve David Seeks Repeat of 2001 Madison Race Every time Steve David, the pilot of the U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto (Miss Madison), straps himself into his Unlimited, he knows that he has the support of an entire community. But with that support comes the added pressure he feels to perform well and win races. David enters the 2003 season with lofty goals and another victory at Madison is at the top of that list. In 2001, David electrified the hometown crowd when he won the Madison Regatta and stamped himself as a legitimate challenger at every race.
* Mike Weber Seeks Victories for USA Racing Partners Mike Weber will back on board the U-10 Miss EMCOR for USA Racing Partners and owner Kim Gregory. Weber enters his second full season as the primary driver of the U-10. Weber, the 1998 Unlimited Rookie of the Year, won three preliminary heats last season and finished seventh in the championship. This season the teams strives for consistency, which will hopefully produce victories and a strong finish in the championship.
* Madison Expected Entries In addition to the drivers mentioned above, Madison will have a full field of professional boat racers including, Dave Villwock (U-1 Miss Budweiser), Terry Troxell (U-2 Miss Trendwest), Mitch Evans (U-3 Vacationville.com), Mark Evans (U-8 Llumar Window Film), Michael Hanson (U-9 Jones Racing), Nate Brown (U-16 Miss Elam Plus) and Dr. Ken Muscatel (U-25 Superior Racing).
