(Lake Hamilton, Fla.) - Hydro-Prop, Inc. announced today the 2002 schedule for the Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series. Hydros, the fastest powerboats in the world, will visit their traditional six race venues this season and possibly an additional venue that is still in negotiation.
"Within a few weeks, Hydros drivers will take the water and compete in the thrilling deck-to-deck action of Unlimited Hydroplane racing," said Gary Garbrecht, Chairman of Hydro-Prop. "We are excited about the upcoming race season and the battles that will be fought at each venue. The Unlimited Hydroplane Series is rich in history and these race venues are significant in that storied past. Some of these venues have held Unlimited races for more than five decades and we are proud to continue that tradition."
"We have spent a great deal of the off-season focusing on the upcoming schedule," continued Garbrecht. "Unfortunately, the tragedy that occurred on September 11 derailed many of the possible venues that we were considering. Though, these events will not take place in 2002, the ground work is in place for possible races in Owensboro, Ken., Sanford, Fla. and Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the future. We have also been negotiating with St. Petersburg, Fla. and that event could occur later this season."
"After having five different winners in six races, anything is possible this year," continued Garbrecht. "With all the experienced drivers this year, we all could witness one of the most competitive seasons in the history of Unlimited hydroplane racing. Each race will be a battle and the championship will be up for grabs. The combination of historic race venues, major markets with loyal fan bases and a major television package make this season one to watch."
The Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Series will begin its season with its annual swing through Southern Indiana. The Unlimiteds will race on the Ohio River at Evansville's Budweiser Thunder on the Ohio (June 28-30) and at the Budweiser Madison Regatta presented by Cruisin' Auto (July 5-7).
Hydros teams then travel to Detroit, Mich. for the Chrysler/Jeep APBA Gold Cup (July 11-14). Drivers will attempt to tame the rough waters of the Detroit River in hopes of securing the most coveted trophy in powerboat racing, the APBA Gold Cup. The Gold Cup, which dates back to 1904 and is the oldest active motorsports trophy in the world, is notorious for making or breaking careers of many talented drivers.
After a one-week break from action, the Unlimiteds head for the Pacific Northwest to compete on back-to-back weekends in front of friends and family of Hydroplane racing. Known among Hydroplane enthusiasts as the home of Unlimited racing, Tri-Cities, Wash. and Seattle, Wash. have held events for the past three and five decades respectively.
The Budweiser Columbia Cup (July 26-28) at Tri-Cities, Wash. produces some of the most thrilling action all season as the fast flowing waters of the Columbia River can play tricks on the drivers. This high-action packed weekend is then followed by the historic General Motors Cup at Seafair (August 2-4) in Seattle, Wash. Thousands of fans line the notorious log-boom watching the Unlimiteds scream across Lake Washington.
The Unlimiteds will finish their season on the beautiful shores of Mission Bay at the Bill Muncey Cup (September 20-22) in San Diego, Calif. Hydros drivers will push the limit in hopes of securing the championship, gaining that additional place in the O'Doul's Driver High Points Championship Fund or just for bragging rights for the off-season.
