(Evansville, Ind.) - Dave Villwock piloted Bernie Little's Miss Budweiser to victory at the Budweiser Thunder on the Ohio earlier today. The win marked Villwock's sixth win in Evansville and Little's 14th. Villwock scored the victory ahead of Mike Hansen in the Miss WABX.
"It was not an easy victory, I assure you of that," said Villwock, who now has 36 career wins. "We didn't have the fastest boat, but the Miss Budweiser team gave me a great-handling boat...that is what made the difference. I congratulate Mike (Hansen) because they were fast all weekend and made us earn the win today."
With this being his sixth consecutive win in Evansville, Villwock declared "Well, now that we have the six pack complete, we'll start work on the twelve pack next year."
"I always like to win the first race of the season," said Little, who is in his 39th consecutive year of Unlimited Hydroplane competition and now has 131 career wins. "I've always felt that it is important to get the season off to a good start. Dave did a super job driving today and the team gave him a great boat. The race today proves that this season is going to be very competitive."
Villwock qualified second fastest with a speed of 150.188 mph behind Hansen's 154.179 mph. Villwock finished first, second and first respectively in his three preliminary heat races.
The Evansville event was the season-opener of the 2001 Budweiser Unlimited Hydroplane Tour.
* Villwock Enjoys Points Lead - By virtue of his victory in the final heat today in addition to his consistent heat race performances, Villwock scored enough points to leave Evansville with the O'Doul's High Points Championship lead. Unofficially, Villwock currently has 158 points, followed by Hansen with 143 and Mark Weber with 124.
"I'm glad that we won the race today, but we're not going to take our focus off of winning the championship," said Villwock. "We are going to go to each race and try to score as many points as we can."
* Next Race - The Miss Budweiser team will head East along the Ohio River to Madison, Ind., site of next weekend's Belterra Casino Madison Regatta. Villwock has three Madison victories to his credit while Little has 13.
"We've certainly had a lot of success in Madison...I love going to Madison," said Villwock. "But I think everyone saw today that there is a lot of competition and that we are going to have to go there and work as hard as we can. I think the fans in Madison are in for a great show."
